The soil in temperate deciduous forests are mostly rich brown soils, but some red and grey soils lack oxygen and have high iron oxide contents. Most areas in deciduous forests have very fertile soil, with lots of organic matter, helping plants grow with rich nutrients.
The deciduous forest features uneven cliffs, crags, hills, and other geographical landforms the make it a rugged place to live in. Rivers, streams, and natural springs also are commonly found in the deciduous forest biome.
